James Day leads the Choir of St Gabriel’s, Pimlico and the Tiffin Boys’ Choir in a performance of Handel’s Messiah, accompanied by an orchestra of baroque period-musicians.
Messiah remains among the most celebrated oratorios in history. Widely recognized as Handel’s most accomplished work, it was composed in just twenty-four days. It debuted in Dublin in 1742, where it was met with overwhelming enthusiasm.
The response to its London debut the following year was less favorable. Only after performances at charity events for the Foundling Hospital did it gain public admiration in England, and its status as Handel’s finest work was recognised.
